National 1 League
About National 1 League (U13-U19 State Competition)
The National 1 League, announced in April 2026, provides a new level of competition for top Northern Utah United state teams. It offers meaningful high-level matches, regional competition, and a development-focused pathway without travel demands.
Players competing in National 1 pursue team success while also showcasing their growth and ambition to be considered for future NUU ECNL-RL opportunities.
This new league will replace the UYSA Premier 1 Division, offering in-state competition with no Sunday play.
WHERE DID THIS LEAGUE COME FROM AND WHY?
In an effort to clearly create a pathway for players to advance to a next level, US Club Soccer, the governing body of ECNL, used their momentum in the US youth soccer landscape to use the National 1 League (formerly NPL) to to provide a pathway for individual teams (and their players) without ECNL or ECNL-RL status to earn their way through team success (yet to be defined) in to a post season competition.
WHAT DO TEAMS DO “ADVANCE” TO IF THEY QUALIFY?
Instead of a simple league-to-league promotion, advancement is more like a pathway into higher national competition opportunities:
- ECNL Conference League Playoffs / Top-performing teams in the National 1 League earn the opportunity to qualify for postseason events.
- These events may include matchups against ECNL Regional League teams that elect to participate after narrowly missing qualification for their own regional playoffs—where only the top four teams from each conference advance.
This pathway represents the most direct “step up” opportunity, rewarding strong National 1 performance with meaningful, higher-level competition.
- The ECNL-RL is widely recognized as a higher-tier youth competition.
- Teams do not enter ECNL-RL individually. Instead, clubs that demonstrate consistent performance—particularly those with multiple strong N1 teams—may be identified for advancement and encouraged to apply for ECNL-RL membership.
- National showcases / talent identification events
- Top teams may also earn:
- Regional championships
- National showcase placement
- College scouting exposure events
IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION
There is no guaranteed “win N1 and move up” promotion system like in professional leagues.
Instead:
- Performance → qualifies you for bigger national events
- Club strength + results → influences future league placement opportunities – aka: when applying for ECNL-RL status the club will be taken more seriously
Simple way to think about it
National 1 is a high-level state soccer platform that is replacing UYSA’s Premier 1 Division. It is designed to give players strong competition and opportunities to grow. Teams that perform well may earn chances to compete in playoff events and showcase tournaments, where players can be seen by higher-level programs.
While some teams in National 1 are highly competitive, most don’t operate at the same level as top platforms like ECNL-RL. This is largely because many talented and ambitious players tend to leave their team. As a result, these motivated players with strong potential choose to move to those clubs or teams in order to continue challenging and developing themselves at a higher level.
At NUU, we encourage players to strive for more by joining an NUU Avalanche ECNL-RL team. This pathway opens the door to an increased number of training sessions, delivered at high intensity by experienced coaches. It may also create opportunities to progress into the ECNL through our partner, Avalanche Soccer Club.
Overall, the system is designed to help players find the appropriate level of competition that matches their ambition and ability, while also providing a clearer pathway for those who are ready to move up.
WHAT DOES THIS LEAGUE REALLY MEAN FOR NUU?
The National 1 League will expose coaches, players, and their parents to postseason opportunities that have the potential to showcase their abilities and identify them for higher levels of play. Players and coaches in NUU, and on teams in our community that advance beyond National 1, will progress to competitions with higher field, referee, and coaching standards similar to ECNL-RL and ECNL.
This will ensure NUU players currently competing in ECNL-RL are always challenged to maintain their roster spots due to the high level of demand to play in ECNL-RL and the pathway it provides into ECNL opportunities through Avalanche Soccer Club.
At the same time, ambitious players—both from within the club and joining from outside—will find that the National 1 League is designed to expose them to the higher standards found in the ECNL-RL environment. This platform creates strong motivation for players to earn their place, develop their game, and build their reputation as they progress.
IT WILL BE A GREAT PLACE FOR OUR 2nd TEAMS TO COMPETE.
Just like every other team in the state, NUU Royalty teams playing state-level soccer will now have the opportunity to earn their way into the National 1 League and, like all other teams, earn access to the postseason opportunities available.
NUU will continue to utilize the lower-level state league—previously known as Premier 1—as a development pathway for both players and coaches, helping them progress into higher levels of league play, including ECNL-RL.
