The Pathway Strategy is more than just a restructuring; it is an ambitious attempt to align the entire American soccer ecosystem—from local recreation leagues to national teams.
The strategy focuses on three core pillars:

An Historic Partnership: US Club Soccer & US Youth Soccer
In an historic move, the two largest youth soccer organizations—US Club Soccer and US Youth Soccer (USYS)—are partnering to form a single, unified pathway for national competitions.
This collaboration eliminates the “competing ladders” of the past. Instead of having to choose between the US Club NPL and the USYS National League, these platforms are merging into a new top-tier, team-based competition currently known by its temporary name, “NewComp”.
The New Combined Pyramid
Under this unified structure, the pathway to the top is clearer than ever before:
- Tier 1: ECNL (Elite Clubs National League): The ECNL remains the premier national platform and the de facto National Championship for club-based competition.
- Tier 2: ECNL Regional League (ECNL-RL): A high-level regional platform that serves as a proving ground for clubs and a direct pathway to the ECNL.
- Tier 3: ECNL Conference League (The New Unified Platform): This level merges the USYS National League and US Club Soccer NPL. It provides a national-caliber environment with a focus on reduced travel.
- Tier 4: District/Local Competition: Localized leagues that feed directly into the national tiers through merit-based promotion.
Simplified Postseason: The ECNL Conference League Playoffs
Starting in summer 2027, the postseason will be streamlined. The new ECNL Conference League Playoffs will replace the old USYS National League and NPL postseason events. This tournament will bring together the top teams from the new unified “NewComp” districts and select ECNL-RL teams, creating a highly competitive environment for college scouting and national recognition. Local Impact: The NUU & Utah Avalanche Pathway
For families in Northern Utah, this national alignment is already being felt through the partnership between Northern Utah United (NUU) and Utah Avalanche. This collaboration ensures that “geography is no longer a limitation.” A player can begin their journey in NUU’s local programs and, through a transparent, merit-based system, progress into ECNL-RL with NUU or the full ECNL National Platform with Utah Avalanche. This “Cache Valley to National Stage” pathway allows elite players to stay rooted in their community while gaining access to the highest levels of American soccer.
