How Northern Utah United and Avalanche open doors for local soccer prospects

In the rolling valleys and vibrant communities of Northern Utah, a new chapter in youth soccer is unfolding — one that blends grassroots passion with elite opportunity.

At the heart of this transformation is a purposeful partnership between Northern Utah United (NUU) and Utah Avalanche Soccer Club, forged with one central mission:

“Unite resources, elevate development, and place local players on national stages.”

This is not a partnership of convenience. It is a player-first alliance built to expand opportunity while preserving the culture that makes NUU special.

A Shared Vision for Growth

For decades, NUU has been a cornerstone of soccer in Cache Valley and surrounding communities — focused on development, belonging, and long-term growth. Avalanche has established itself as one of the region’s premier competitive clubs, competing at the highest youth levels, including the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL).

When leadership from both organizations began discussions, one thing became clear: they shared the same vision.

They believed local players should not have to leave their community to access elite opportunities.

“This partnership allows our players to stay rooted in Northern Utah while gaining access to national platforms.”

A Clear, Structured Pathway

The strength of this collaboration lies in a defined development pathway:

  • Introduction Soccer (Destination Soccer)
  • Local Development (Challenger League)
  • Utah Youth Soccer State Competition
  • ECNL Regional League (ECNL-RL)
  • ECNL National Platform (via Avalanche)

The ECNL Regional League plays a pivotal role. For players U13 and older, ECNL-RL provides high-level competition against top clubs from Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico — along with national showcase events attended by college coaches.

Because Avalanche fields full ECNL teams, standout ECNL-RL players now have a transparent pathway into higher-level training and competition.

Directors and coaches collaborate across both clubs to identify and develop early talent. Top performers are invited to attend Avalanche ECNL training environments and, in some cases, compete in matches and showcases.

“Geography is no longer a limitation for our players.”

A young athlete can now begin locally with NUU and grow into national-level exposure without sacrificing community connection.

Local Roots. National Reach.

The success of this pathway is best told through the players.

Reagan Brown (social media), after developing within NUU at the state and ECNL-RL levels, and committing to compete with the the 07/08 Avalanche team, earned an invitation to the ECNL Girls Texas 2026 National Selection Game (Soccerwire.com), one of the most prestigious identification events in youth soccer.

That invitation represents more than individual recognition. It represents a working pathway from Northern Utah fields to national stages.

Additional recent NUU 07/08 girls (team page and player profiles) college commitments include:

These milestones validate what the partnership was designed to create: real opportunity. This is just the start, as the NUU Avalanche Brand becomes more familiar over the years, more college coaches will seek the hard working talented players in Northern Utah.

“A clear, connected pathway that turns preparation into exposure — and exposure into opportunity.”

Raising the Standard

“When I was hired as Director of Coaching for Northern Utah United in 2018, it was impressed upon me that we must keep players competing locally while providing national-level opportunities,” said Jeff Ginn.

The partnership with Utah Avalanche has become a tremendous asset to our community. Our top players can continue competing alongside the teammates and friends they grew up with while gaining elite-level experiences, without fully relocating or leaving the valley for daily training.

As a result, standards have risen across the board. Expectations are higher. The competitive environment is more intense and intentional.

ECNL-RL also brings elevated standards in:

  • Refereeing quality
  • Field requirements
  • Coaching education
  • Certified athletic trainers present at every match

When I was first introduced to a platform league that required air travel for games, I was hesitant. After two years of involvement, I can confidently say:

“The ECNL-RL platform is unlike anything else in our soccer community.”

More Than Soccer

While exposure and college commitments matter, the culture matters more.

Across both organizations, families and coaches describe an environment rooted in collaboration, development, and accountability.

Trevor Waschman (NUU’s ECNL-RL Director) and the Avalanche ECNL staff have helped raise expectations across the board, not just in performance, but in character, preparation, and leadership.

“Higher standards today create stronger adults tomorrow.”

The partnership between NUU and Avalanche is cementing a sustainable pathway, one that keeps players grounded in their community while opening doors across the region and the nation.

And, for northern Utah families, that changes everything – culture, expectations, standards, & opportunities.
